The Opportunity of a Lifetime

After completing 10 hours of community service, students can begin flight training with the Eagle Squadron’s CFI (Certified Flight Instructor). For every hour of flight training students must complete one additional hour of community service.

Elizabethton Airport

Flight instruction is based out of the Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Randy Musick (airport manager) and Dan Cogan (flight school supervisor) both provide an immense amount of help to make this program possible.

The Watauga Eagle Squadron owns a 1977 Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The Cessna Skyhawk is the most popular training aircraft available. The Skyhawk is durable, forgiving, and incredibly reliable. 734ZT was originally owned and maintained by Moody Aviation, and the Watauga Eagle Squadron is only its second owner. Both Moody and the Eagle Squadron have always maintained this airplane to a high standard of safety.

Shannon Drinnon

Shannon Drinnon is the Watauga Eagle Squadron director. Shannon has been a flight instructor for over 10 years. He is certified by the FAA as a commercial pilot, flight instructor, and instrument instructor. Shannon is originally from Morristown, and he graduated with a Masters in Education from East Tennessee State University. He is pictured at left with his two sons, Collin and Corbin. Click here for info on previous instructors.

Flight training rates are as follows (RATES SUBJECT TO CHANGE):

  • 0-15 hours: $10 per hour aircraft “rental” (flight instruction is free)
  • 15-25 hours: $50 per hour aircraft “rental” (flight instruction is free)
  • 40+ hours: Airport Rate (currently $110 per hour, flight instruction is free)

Through this program, students can solo or earn their Private Pilot’s License for a fraction of the cost that the general public would pay. Few students in the country have this kind of opportunity.
